Two weeks back I had a very nice experience of visiting Mantralayam where Raghavendra temple is located. It was really a nice experience. But I didn't expect it would be a lonely trip. I loved it.

Before going there my colleagues advised me to have a telugu guy to accompany me since it is in inner part of AndhraPradesh. It is in Kurnool district, very nearer to Karnataka border. Because those people don't know Hindi or English, they knows only Telugu. I went to MGBS bus stand nearer to Koti at 10 PM on saturday(3/7/10) night. I missed to catch the last bus. Anyway I had planned to go. So I asked the nearest place to there. They told me to go to Adoni, a place nearer to mantralayam. So I planned to go to Adoni, I got into the bus. I asked the driver about the distance to Mantralayam from Adoni. But he scolded me something because of I asked in
English. He thought that I know Telugu eventhough I was asking in English. I told I don't know Telugu. Then I explained him with hands. Then he told it is 25 KM away.

At around 4 o'Clock I reached Adoni. There was only two or three people in the whole bus stand. Then  a bus came around 30 minutes past 4. Then aorund 45 minutes past 5, I reached mantralayam. There I found one very little room for keep the things and refreshing. That lodge keeper told super star visited there once Laughing. Then I went to the temple around 8:30 after break fast. Then I am queued up there inside temple for around one hour. There is the tomb of Swami
Raghavendra  where he buried alive and one Hanuman statue opposite to that. After prayers I returned back to room around 10. There is no direct bus from mantralayam to Hyderabad. Either I need to go to Adoni again or Raichur, where I can get buses frequently. So, I chose Raichur this time. It is 45 KMs away
from there. I reached there in an hour. I have taken photos of Hyderabad letters in telugu to  identify buses. After reaching there, I found a fort there and roamed aorund there for sometime. And I have asked for Hyderabad buses. They showed me the bus. But the destination board in the  bus was something else in all the buses they showed. I thought they are telling wrongly or I am wrong. After that only I identified that, Raichur is in Karnataka. They have written the
name board in Kannada. Any way both Telugu and Kannada seems to be the same for me. Cool. From  there one straight route to Hyderabad. After roaming some time around Koti, i reached home in evening. It was really a nice experience to roam alone Tongue out.

Some weeks back, unfortunately water went inside my laptop through the holes. It baceme complete wet. Then I went to service center. They told only
hard disk got dameged because of water. Then they replaced it with a newer one. I was thinking of what is the need for a storage medium in computers.
Why not we use air as a storage medium and how future computers will be? I am not sure whether it is possible. But there is a lot of possibilities for it.
Now a days there is a huge competition between giants of technology, Google, Microsoft and Apple. There is a competition between on every products.
And also competitions between social networking providers, Google, Facebook and  Twitter. As long as they are becoming great, hackers and spammers are also becoming greater to crack all of their protocols. :) So, we need a new design and protocols in upcoming things.

As we know, there is data in air all around us. Using that we are talking in phone, watching TV, listening to radio, browsing internet and more. The data is
broadcasted from somewhere and we are all accessing it. While it is possible in a large spectrum, why not it is possible for a single user within his own premises.
I am expecting future system without any storage medium. We don't need to capture the data into a small device :). It will be available everywhere.

Home Infotainment Platform PDF Print E-mail

Today TCS has relaesed one product from their Kolkata R&D division. It is like a set top box for Internet connection which can be used with our television. It is a nice idea. It makes easier to use television instead of computer for browsing.

Snippet of the device from TCS internal:

TCS’ Home Infotainment Platform (HIP) has been launched successfully in India and Philippines. In India it was launched through Tata Teleservices Ltd. under the brand name ‘Dialog’ in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. In Philippines it is launched through Smart Communications under the brand name ‘SmartBro SurfTV’.

HIP, from TCS Innovation Labs – Kolkata, is a revolutionary device as it enables internet browsing without the aid of computers, on home TV sets. It looks like a simple set top box and has four USB ports.

HIP is a convergence device that can render Internet Content and multimedia (audio, video, pictures) on TV. It also supports collaboration applications like SMS and Video Chat on TV. The platform targets the majority of the population in developing countries that does not have a computer and is not able to use the Internet as an information source.  By using standard Internet connection through 2G/3G wireless and asymmetric digital subscriber lines, TCS Home Infotainment Platform provides consumers access to interactive services over the television at an easily affordable price of around 100 USD.

Studies show that the spread of internet can have a positive affect on a country’s economic efficiency, functioning of markets and economic development in general. However, internet penetration is very low in developing countries and hence these countries stand to benefit greatly from HIP. Since HIP uses TV as the primary display channel and a TV-like remote control as the primary Input device, it brings in a familiarity aspect in its use that can put a non-computer-savvy user at ease to use the device.

HIP is a platform which could also be used for a variety of developmental programs and new business models in education (distance education) healthcare (telemedicine), TV-Commerce and Banking.

Among HIP’s features are:

  • Web browser application for Internet browsing, supports popular Internet apps like Search, Chat, Facebook, Twitter, Webmails etc.
  • Dedicated YouTube Video Player
  • Indian language support
  • Facility to download movies, songs, photos and documents from Internet to USB Pen-drive
  • Multi feature picture viewer to view pictures from USB Pen-drive
  • Multi feature Audio and Video Player to play songs and movies from USB Pen-drive
  • Document viewer to view Word, PDF and Excel files from USB Pen-drive
  • Support form Collaboration Applications like SMS and Video Chat

HIP makes use of a range of innovations and TCS Innovation Labs Kolkata has filed for 12 patents around this product. HIP is another example of frugal innovation, for a range of services that traditionally could be availed only through a computer. It is also a good example of co-innovation as it brings together a partner and vendor eco-system of Texas Instruments (Chipset), Olive Communications (Hardware integration), Opera (Browser) and Adobe (Flash).

Google is making their next move into Broadband market. Google plans to build a fibre optic broadband network that  will connect people to Internet at speeds 100 times faster than most  existing broadband connections in the US.

They said that Google plans to build and test the network in trial communities around the country starting later this year and that the tests could encompass
as many as 500,000 people. They cited 3-dimensional medical imaging and quick,  high-definition film downloads among the applications of such high-speed internet access.

"We'll deliver internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access  to today with 1 gigabit per second, fibre-to-the-home connections," the post said.  "We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people."

Google will make it possible ASAP. There are many competitors for Google now. But still  they are the best in developing killer web apps and in providing web services.   In the last year it made a splash in the mobile phone market  with its Android operating system and lastweek they have announced a social networking
feature aimed at taking on Facebook and Twitter.

If they implement it means, in future we dont need heavy systems. We can have  everything as a thin client. All the process of an operating system can be done
as "SaaS" or as a "On Demand Service" using Cloud Computing. We will expect those days as soon as possible.
